Sleeve Anchors — Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What size drill bit do I need to drill a hole for a sleeve anchor?
A: Drill bit size is equal to the anchor diameter.
Q: Do I need to use a hammer drill to drill the hole?
A: The use of a hammer drill is highly recommended. The quality of the hole is critical and a hammer drill will provide a better quality hole.
Q: How deep does the sleeve anchor need to be embedded into the base material?
A: Each sleeve anchor diameter has a minimum embedment, which can be found on the sleeve anchor technical page.
Q: How close together can I install sleeve anchors?
A: The concrete anchor industry has established a minimum standard of ten (10) anchor diameters for spacing between anchors.
Q: How close to an unsupported edge can I install a sleeve anchor?
A: The concrete anchor industry has established a minimum of five (5) anchor diameters from an unsupported edge.
Q: How important is it to clean out the hole before inserting the sleeve anchor?
A: Very important! Before placing the anchor, the hole must be cleaned out by using compressed air/shop vac/wire brush to remove all the loose dust from the hole. This will minimize slippage after the sleeve anchor is set.
Q: How do I determine the length of sleeve anchor required?
A: Add the thickness of the material to be fastened, plus the minimum embedment for the diameter of anchor being used.
Q: Can I install the sleeve anchor in brick or block?
A: Yes. The sleeve anchor is designed for use in concrete, brick and block.
Q: Does a sleeve anchor come in the same diameters in both zinc plated and stainless steel?
A: The hex head sleeve anchor is available in five (5) diameters in zinc plated and 304 stainless steel- 5/16", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", and 3/4". The acorn head sleeve anchor is available in one (1) diameter in zinc plated and 304 stainless steel- 1/4".
Q: Is the sleeve anchor one piece or a combination of different hardware?
A: The sleeve anchor is made up of four parts: nut, washer, threaded stud and sleeve. The threaded stud is flared to a cone shape at one end and the rest of the stud is threaded. The sleeve is a tubular piece of steel that fits over the stud and expands when the stud is pulled up through it. These anchors come fully assembled and ready to use.
Q: After I install a sleeve anchor, will the nut be exposed?
A: The hex and acorn headed sleeve anchor can be used to fasten/anchor in any application where the head of the anchor does not need to be flush with the surface of the fixture being attached. When the sleeve anchor is set in the concrete, the nut will be above the surface.
Q: Why can I use sleeve anchors in brick and block as well as concrete?
A: Sleeve anchors provide full 360° hole contact over a large area and reduces concrete stress. The 360 expansion of the sleeve increases the likelihood that the sleeve anchor will set in the brick or block base material when the nut is tightened.
Q: What size do I drill the hole for a 1/2" sleeve anchor?
A: When a drilling a hole in concrete for a 1/2" sleeve anchor, a 1/2" carbide tipped drill bit should be used.
